Frequently Asked Questions

My friends can´t see the IP address of the server I´m playing on. Why?
The detection of the server IP is experimental, it doesn´t work as good as in the Windows version of Xfire. To enable it, you have to activate it in the preferences in the „Network“ tab („Enable Network Traffic Capturing“). When you launch iFire the next time it will ask you for your admin password. Entering it will enable the IP detection. When you now start playing a online game, the IP address should be displayed in the „My Profile“ window (Tools -> My Profile). It will only work if you are connected to the internet via the built-in Ethernet port and you do not have any UDP network traffic beside the game you´re playing (no Teamspeak, no Peer2Peer downloads). It won´t work, too, when iFire has been running for a long time, so restarting it might help.If none of this helps you can also enter the server IP manually in the „Override IP“ window (Tools -> Override IP…).

Why does iFire keep asking me for my admin password?
You have enabled the „Network Traffic Capturing“, which tries to find the IP address of any game servers you´re playing on out. On Mac OS X you have to have admin rights to view the outgoing and incoming network packets, so you have to disable this feature in the preferences to make iFire stop asking you for the password.

Why don´t I hear any sound when I receive/send a message?
You can choose the sounds in the preferences in the „Sounds“ tab for the 4 events (Contact signs on/off, Message sent/received).

I don´t like these sounds! How to add custom ones?
Copy them to /Library/Sounds or <YourUserFolder>/Library/Sounds. Now you can select them in the preferences.

I´ve installed the game XYZ on my Mac, but iFire doesn´t show it up in the „Installed Games“ list. What´s the problem?
Either you have never launched the game before or iFire simply doesn´t support it. It´s also possible that you´ve changed the name of the game or that you are using a localized version of the game (e.g. „The Sims 2“ or „Die Sims 2“).

iFire hangs up when I select a friend in the buddy list/a friend has no icon in front of his name.
Xfire has been updated and now supports more games. Your friend is playing on of this new games. Please look for an update or contact me, I´ll release a patch as soon as possible.

What do the ticks/crosses in the „Supported Mac Games“ list mean?
They indicate whether iFire supports „One Click Joining“ with that game.

Why is Counter-Strike/Counter-Strike Source/etc. supported by iFire? I thought there was no Mac port of these games?
They´re meant to be played with Codeweavers Crossover Games.

I really like iFire! How to donate to you?

Limitations

One-Click Join
Directly joining onto a server doesn´t work for all games, since some Mac ports do not offer this feature (unlike the Windows equivalent).

Xfire In-Game
There is no support for Xfire In-Game at all. Xfire In-Game allows you to receive and send messages while you are playing a fullscreen game. I think Xfire achieves this by injecting code into the running game. I do not know whether this is possible in Mac OS X.

Voice Chat, Group Chats, File Transfers, Clan/Guild system
Non of these are supported. iFire depends on a 3rd party library called „xfirelib“ which does not provide any support for these features. As long as this library doesn´t support it I can´t do anything.

Screenshots or Movies of your games
iFire does not support taking screenshots or recording movies.

Skins
I do not think that skins are necessary. In my opinion all Mac OS X applications should look the same (Aqua, Brushed Metal or Polished Metal look, depending on the system), so I won´t add support for skins.
